Dental calculus refers to the mineralized bacterial plaque that is fused on natural teeth surface where there is constant supply of saliva. Dental calculus composed primarily of calcium phosphate mineral salts deposited between and within remnants of freely viable microorganisms.
FORMATION
Dental calculus simply are formed from food remainings that stuck between teeth, thus when oral bacteria and mineral salts form saliva mix with those remnants form calcified plaque that trap stains on teeth and cause discolouration.
Calculus formation is associated with number of clinical manifestations such as bad teeth,receding gums,teeth discoloration and chronically inflamed gingiva
Commonly seen over the buccal suface of maxillary molars and lingual surface of anterior teeth where salivary duct open into oral cavity
TREATMENT
Plaque/calculus buildup can be removed by dental professionals using ultrasonic dental tools such as periodontal scalers. So as soon as you realize this problems you are advised to see dentists for medical treatment.
PREVENTION AND HYIGENIC ADVICE
-Brush your teeth at least twice a day
-Flossing to remove plaque from which calculus is formed
